This is the first recorded naval battlefield in Taiwan – when Shen Yorong of Ming Dynasty came to Kalaowan with his army to defeat the Japanese. Hundreds of years have passed, where the river meets the sea is now teeming with hundreds of species of fish, shrimp and shellfish, whales and dolphins are seen swimming back and forth, and the ecological resources are bountiful, including the vast wetland ecology, mangrove landscape, and the habitat of Taiwan dark cicadas – an endemic species of Taiwan. In recent years, Taijiang National Park has promoted the conservation strategy of eco-friendly habitat creation, providing more friendly areas for black-faced spoonbills to inhabit and forage.
